Rehearse with a scene partner

An AI partner reads every other part — it acts — so you can run the scene alone, at any hour.

Get into the scene

Open your script and tap Rehearse.
Tap the character you're playing.
Choose the scenes you want to run.
Give each of the other parts a voice. Tap a voice to hear it read a line.
Tap Start rehearsal.

The first time, Subtext reads the script before any of this — a minute or so while it finds the scenes and the characters.

Taking turns

Your partner's line plays aloud in the voice you cast. Then it's you: the mic opens, a waveform shows it's listening, and your line reveals itself word by word as you say it. Get it, and the scene moves on by itself.

Replay Partner: Hear their line again. It costs nothing to replay, so run the same scene twenty times.
Next: Move on without waiting for their line to finish.
Tap to speak: Opens and closes the mic. Tap the waveform to start your line over.
Hint: Reveals the next few hidden words, when the line has gone.
Skip: Give up on this one and move to the next line.

At the top: the scene heading, and Line 8 / 24 so you know where you are.

Hide your lines

This is how the script comes off the page. Tap and switch on Hide My Lines: your lines are blacked out until you speak them, and each word appears only once you've said it — in order. Speak the line and you watch it fill in behind you.

Hide My Lines on. You've said I'm gonna — the rest stays blacked out until you say it too.

Hide My Lines off. The line sits there in full — for the first read, when you're still finding it.

When a passage is nearly yours, switch on First-Letter Mode instead. Every word of your line shrinks to its first letter — enough of a foothold to remember the rest, not enough to read. It overrides Hide My Lines while it's on.

How close is close enough

Under Accuracy, in the same sheet, choose how strict the mic is with you.

Paraphrase: Forgiving. The words can be approximate — Subtext waits for the tail of the line, the cue, and lets you move on.
Strict: Exact words, in order. This is memorization mode, and it's the one that gets you off book.

Start forgiving, finish strict. You can flip between them right in the header, mid-scene, without stopping.

Change your mind, mid-scene

Nothing you chose at the start is locked in.

The character pill: Tap your character's name in the header to read a different part. Your place in the scene is kept.
SCENES: Opens the scene editor without losing your place — fix a mis-scanned word, add a beat, split a scene.
Voices: Every co-star is listed with their current voice. Tap one to re-cast them; the new voice takes their next line.
Text Size: Scale the script up or down until it reads at arm's length.
The speed pill: How fast your partner reads, for this rehearsal. To change it everywhere, set Default speed on the You tab.

Scene by scene

Running several scenes, you get a card between each one — Scene 2 of 5, and Begin Scene 2 when you're ready. There's a button back to the scene before it if you want another crack at it.

At the end: Rehearse again, Replay Scene 3, or Done.
