Record a voiceover

Slate, lay down each scene, star your keepers, polish out the room, and export one clean MP3.

A voiceover audition is built a scene at a time. You slate once, roll as many takes as you like on each scene, choose the keepers, and Subtext joins them into a single MP3 with the slate at the front.

Start one

1. Go to the Studio tab and switch to Voice.
2. Tap +, then From a script to read off your sides, or Without a script for a monologue or a reel piece.

Your voiceovers stack up in a list, each showing where it's got to — 2 scenes · slate · exported. Press and hold one to Delete it.

Choose your microphone

Two pills sit at the top of the recorder: your input on the left, your output on the right.

The mic pill

Shows what you're recording through. Plug in an interface or a headset and tap the pill to pick between them. With only one microphone attached there's nothing to choose, so it sits quiet.

The speaker pill

Opens iOS's own output picker — speaker, headphones, AirPods, AirPlay.

Slate first

Tap the SLATE chip and hit record. Say your name, your agency, and the role — that's what opens the MP3, and it's what casting hears first.

You say the same thing at every audition, so you needn't record it twice. Once you've got a good one, tap Set as default. From then on any new voiceover offers Use default, and Remove clears the slate from this one. (Those controls live under the SLATE chip when you're recording without a script; with a script attached, manage the slate from the Review screen.)

Record a scene at a time

Tap + to add a scene, then the big red circle to roll. The hint under it tells you where you are — Tap to record a take, then Recording — tap to stop. Roll as many as you want; each one lands in the take list below as Take 1, Take 2, and so on, and the star beside a take marks it as one to keep.

A tick on a chip means that scene has a keeper. The meter above the record circle is your level: green is right, amber is loud, red is clipping. Watch it on a rehearsal pass before you commit.

Rename a scene by typing over its name, and delete a take with the bin beside it — no confirmation, so be sure.

Reading off the script

Attach a PDF — from + → From a script, or Attach a script to read while you record — and the recorder becomes the script itself, full-bleed, with the controls pinned at the bottom.

A thin line floats across the page: the capture marker. Scroll until it sits where a scene begins, tap the + beside it, and that scene is pinned to that spot. Come back to the scene later — tap its chip, or one of the numbered tabs down the right edge — and the script flies back to exactly where you dropped it.

Set scene start here re-pins it to wherever the marker is now. Delete scene removes it, takes and all.

Review

Bottom right, beside the record circle. It lights up once you've rolled a single take.

Choose your takes

On the Review screen: Play each scene's takes and star the keeper. Tap on the one you want.

Star more than one take in a scene and Subtext marks it VARIANCE — you're sending casting the alternates, and it exports them as separate files in a zip rather than one MP3.

The bar at the bottom keeps score under KEEPERS: 3 scenes → one MP3, or 5 takes → variance. Tap Continue when it reads right.

Finish and export

Trim your slate, then trim each scene. Drag the two handles on the waveform to top and tail a take, and press play to hear exactly what you've got — including the polish, live.

Pause between scenes

How much air sits between one read and the next. Anywhere from nothing to two seconds; it starts at four-tenths.

Studio Sound

Cleaner, fuller, consistent — automatically tuned to each take. It's on to start with. Play a scene and toggle it to hear it change.

Fade out

Gently fade the end to silence. Most reads don't need it.

The export bar tells you what you're about to make: STUDIO SOUND ON or RAW, and beneath it either Slate + 3 scenes → one MP3 or a count of takes headed for a zip. The button changes to match — Export MP3, or Export takes when you've got variance.

Name it and Subtext fills in the casting standard for voice: Your Name – Project, with no character.

Send it as a link

Tap Get shareable link and they listen and download it right in the browser — no app, nothing to install. The link works for seven days, and Share the file instead sends the MP3 itself.
