Send it to a reader
Text a friend a link. They record the other lines in their browser — no app — and their real voice reads with you.
An AI partner is there at two in the morning. A person is there when it counts. Send a fellow actor a link and they record the other lines in their browser — no app, no account, a couple of minutes — and from then on their real voice runs the scene with you, in every rehearsal and on every take.
Send the link
- Open your script and tap Send to a Reader.
- Pick the part you're reading. Your reader records everyone else.
- Tap Choose scenes — or Choose pages, if you're working from sides.
- Type your reader's name so the message greets them by it.
- Leave them a note, if you like. Then tap Create link.
Subtext writes the message for you — Would you be my reader for “The People v. Cantwell”? Tap the link and record the other character's lines right in your browser — takes a couple of minutes, no app to download. Send it however you text your friends.
The first time, Subtext needs to read the script — the same one-time Analyze script step as a rehearsal. And it shows you which parts your reader will cover, so you know what you're asking of them before you ask.
Leave them a note
Your reader sees this the moment they open the link, before a single line.

- A voice note, up to eighty seconds. The fastest way to say play him cold and impatient — and they hear how you mean it.
- Write it
- Type it instead. Up to a thousand characters.
What your reader sees
They tap the link and a web page opens. That's the whole of it — no app to install, no account to make, nothing to sign.

The scene is laid out in full so they can follow it. Their lines are live and waiting; yours are greyed and tagged YOUR PARTNER · DON'T READ, so nobody records the wrong part. The line they're on is highlighted, and the bar at the top counts up as they go.
At the bottom, a cue tells them exactly what to do: Reading CANTWELL · line 4 of 5. They tap the circle, say the line, tap it again. Then Play to hear it back, or Next › to move on. They can go back and re-record anything, but they can't skip ahead — the next line stays locked until this one is in.
When the last line lands they get a wrap screen — Nice work, Sam. — and a Send my reading button. Subtext checks with the server before it lets them send, so a line that quietly failed to upload gets caught rather than lost.
When their lines come in
You get a notification the moment they finish, even with the app shut. Open Send to a Reader again and the card tells you where things stand — Link sent · waiting, then Recording in progress, then All lines in — over a count: 3 of 5 lines recorded.
- Rehearse with your reader
- Run the scene with their voice instead of an AI one.
- Self-tape with your reader
- Their lines play back at you between yours while you tape. This is the only voice Subtext will put on a self-tape.
- Check for new recordings
- Pulls in whatever they've done since you last looked.
- Send the link again
- For when it's slipped down their messages.
- Delete reader recording
- Clears their lines from this tape. You can always send a fresh link.
